More about Joel Vestal

Joel Vestal is a storyteller, creator, refugee and immigrant advocate, and faith-inspired voice helping people live with greater compassion, resilience, and courage in a loud and divided world.

As a young teenager, Joel traveled internationally and encountered communities shaped by poverty, conflict, resilience, faith, and survival. Those early experiences opened his eyes to both the pain people carry and the strength human beings are capable of holding onto. They shaped the way he sees struggle, culture, justice, and hope.

Joel’s journey has not been linear. He has experienced both success and setback, and he knows that life’s setbacks are often the greatest teachers — if we let them be. He has wrestled with doubt, walked through trauma, divorce, personal loss, and seasons where life had to be rebuilt one honest step at a time. Some of his deepest lessons did not come through ease, but through the experiences that broke him, stretched him, humbled him, and slowly helped rebuild him.

Faith, family, and community have sustained and nurtured Joel along the way. It has helped him keep going when life felt heavy, given him language for hope, and reminded him that healing is rarely something we do alone. At the same time, Joel’s work is welcoming to those who do not share his faith, those wrestling with belief, and those who have been wounded by religion. He believes some of the most honest and necessary conversations happen when people are rebuilding after disappointment, disillusionment, trauma, or loss.

Today, Joel’s work brings together storytelling, refugee and immigrant advocacy, cultural understanding, entrepreneurship, faith, and healing. Through nonprofit leadership, writing, video storytelling, and creative projects, he helps people stay grounded and compassionate while learning how to rebuild, grow, forgive, heal, and keep becoming.

His work is shaped by global travel, cross-cultural experiences, and years spent walking alongside refugee and immigrant families in his own community — listening to stories, sharing meals, building friendships, and learning how much humanity we all share beneath our differences.

Joel is faith-inspired and trauma-informed, but never interested in forcing belief. Some of the people who have shaped him most see the world very differently than he does. That is one reason he believes we need more bridges of relationship, curiosity, humility, and compassion.

He is not a scholar pretending to have all the answers. He is someone learning through real life, real people, and real stories. Many of the lessons that shaped him most did not happen in classrooms, but in conversations, homes, kitchens, refugee communities, and among people often overlooked by the world.

Joel believes in taking action before you feel ready, learning from failure rather than fearing it, building bridges across cultures and beliefs, healing honestly rather than pretending, and creating work that serves people while building something meaningful.

His hope is simple: to bring understanding where there is division, compassion where there is fear, and hope where it feels difficult to find.  Because soaring does not mean leaving others behind.
